Vegetation and Geomorphic Connectivity in Mountain Fluvial Systems

چکیده

Rivers are complex biophysical systems, constantly adjusting to a suite of changing governing conditions, including vegetation cover within their basins. This review seeks to: (i) highlight the crucial role that vegetation’s influence on efficiency clastic material fluxes (geomorphic connectivity) plays in defining mountain fluvial landscape’s behavior; and (ii) identify key challenges which hinder progress understanding this subject. To end, selective literature is carried out illustrate pervasiveness plants’ effects geomorphic channel networks (longitudinal connectivity), as well between channels broader landscape (lateral connectivity). Taken together, reviewed evidence lends support thesis vegetation-connectivity linkages play central regulating behavior systems. The manuscript concluded by brief discussion need for integration mechanistic research into local feedbacks plants sediment with basin-scale considers emergent phenomena.

Recent climatic change and catastrophic geomorphic processes in mountain environments

Climatic warming during the last 100-150 years has resulted in a significant glacier ice loss from mountainous areas of the world. Certain natural processes which pose hazards to people and development in these areas have accelerated as a result of this recent deglaciation. These include glacier avalanches, landslides and slope instability caused by glacier debuttressing, and outburst floods fr...

The Importance of Seasonally Frozen Ground (SFG) in Mountain Environments To Hydrological, Ecological, and Geomorphic Systems

OVERVIEW There has been little research on the importance of Seasonally Frozen Ground (SFG), including permafrost, to many of the major processes in mountain environments. One reason has been the difficulty in measuring and estimating the areal extent of surface frost that occurs under seasonal snowpacks. Here we present preliminary evidence from the Colorado Front Range suggesting that SFG has...

Geomorphic controls on hyporheic exchange flow in mountain streams

[1] Hyporheic exchange flows were simulated using MODFLOW and MODPATH to estimate relative effects of channel morphologic features on the extent of the hyporheic zone, on hyporheic exchange flow, and on the residence time of stream water in the hyporheic zone. Four stream reaches were compared in order to examine the influence of stream size and channel constraint. Within stream reaches, the in...

A New Method for Predicting Well Pattern Connectivity in a Continental Fluvial-delta Reservoir

The features of bad flow unit continuity and multiple layers emphesize the importance of a well pattern design for the development of a fluvial-delta reservoir. It is proposed a method to predict well pattern connectivity (WPC) based on the exploration and evaluation of wells. Moreover, the method helps evaluate the risk of well placement. This study initially establishes the parameters for cha...
